![]() ![]() What are your opinions and experiences with Dual Purpose marine batteries? I am looking for a battery with longevity as well as good CCA and Reserve mins. Which are good and poor batteries? I really just run my Garmin MFD, VHF radio and Polk sound system off the battery while fishing. I wanted to get your opinions out there that if I were to purchase a new Dual Purpose marine battery, which one should I get? What are your experiences. Reportedly, some of the previous batteries of Diehard were also manufactured by. But after the company sold out its battery business, Clarios LLC took over the responsibility and started making batteries for the Diehard brand. Johnson Controls was the manufacturer until late 2019, Brookfield Business Partners bought the Johnson Controls Power Solutions company and formed Clarios LLC. I have not reached a situation where I need to switch to my #2 battery yet to start my motor, but I am thinking that this will probably be the last season for this battery as well (it will have lasted 4 seasons if I make it through this season). Since 2019, all Diehard batteries were produced by North American vehicle battery manufacturing giant Johnson Controls. It drops below 12v as soon as I turn on my MFD and radio (this does not happen with my #2 battery - so that battery is still good - perhaps I should alternate from #1 to #2 on different days?). Well this battery is now also starting to go on me as well. Back in 2017, I purchased an Optimum Blue Top D31M and paid $267 for it on sale at Amazon as a replacement battery for my #1 Sears Diehard battery. On the other hand, DieHard batteries provide a CCA rating between 900-575A. Duralast batteries offer decent cold cranking amps scoring between 710-810A. However, batteries with higher CCA ratings work optimally even during cold months. The other is still going strong to this day! I always charge my batteries with my on boat charger overnight! The way I run my boat, I always run off of one battery (battery switch set to #1, and leave my second battery as a backup battery for emergencies (never had to do this). In fact, a few batteries fail to function in freezing temperatures. Like all DieHard deep cycle batteries, it is designed to meet the high energy demands of a boat and is capable of powering all GPS systems, radios, trolling motors and lighting systems. I paid $460 for these batteries ($230 each on sale) back then, but I don't think that Sears sell these anymore - at least not under the Sears brand - perhaps the Odyssey 31M-PC2150? Three years into the Sears Diehard batteries one of them died on me (my #1 battery). The DieHard Marine Gel battery is currently considered the best marine battery on the market. Back when I purchased my 2014 Tidewater 230cc (Beverly Ann II), I bought two Sear's Diehard Platinum Marine Dual Purpose batteries based on their starting and capacity ratings (1150 CCA and 205 mins Reserve Capacity). you can find it for a hell of a lot cheaper than 310.00 though -) West gets a pretty penny for their batteries.Hi Everyone! The West house brand AGM 31 should have a manufacturers part number of 8A31DT or 8A31DTM. In addition you will get reserve capacity that is closer to a traditional wet cell deep cycle of the same size. An AGM lends itself very well to being a true dual purpose as it has significantly higher cranking amps then a gel cell (in the same size or class). ![]() The "Dual Purpose" label would be used to identify a battery that is not a true deep cycle, nor is it a high calcium content cranking battery. 4D, 8D & other commercial batteries tend to have posts and other custom terminals specific to the application. Threaded studs with lock nuts are routinely used in group 24-group 31 batteries. The only real difference between marine & auto is primarily the terminal. The West Marine labeled batteries are manufactured by East Penn Manufacturing (Deka batteries). My family owns a battery warehouse distributorship. ![]()
